Are you tying the knot next year? Not sure where to start with planning? Then you’ve come to the right place! Here on our personalised newspaper gifts blog we look at five wedding trends you can expect to see in 2019. Take them as inspiration for your wedding planning – from the flower arrangements to the style of your dress to the wedding party makeup. Read on…
Function Over Frills for Dresses
Who can forget the fuss the UK and the rest of the world gave the Duchess of Sussex on her wedding day? And for good reason – did you see her dress, people?
Next year we can expect to see dress inspiration in the way of Meghan Markle’s simple but classic wedding gown. Look out for down-to-earth, functional dresses that skip over the extra bells and whistles. Dramatically long trains will be swapped for more practical lengths that will make the switch from ceremony to reception easy peasy.

And how often have you heard protests about pocket-less dresses? Protest no more, brides – dresses with pockets are in! And it could all be thanks to this bride who went viral for her dress’s hidden pockets. Now you have a place to store extra makeup, tissues and even something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…
Illustrated Invitations
Got a hand for art, or hoping to make your wedding invitations extra special and personalised? Well now’s your time to shine! Next year couples will opt for hand-drawn invitations to include a personal touch for guests and to hint at the wedding’s décor and themes. No more generic invitations – show off your artsy side!
Need a few ideas? You could have the venue location drawn, a magical forest if you’re going for an enchanted theme, rows of flowers to reflect the floral arrangements featured on the big day, or even a grinning caricature of the bride and groom for a humorous take.
Low Florals
We’ve seen flower arrangements get larger and larger in recent times, both as decorations and as bouquets, but in 2019, expect to see them back off. Brides and grooms in 2019 will go for rows of low flowers so guests can see each other easily as they eat. It makes the perfect natural framing for photos of the happy couple! Paired with long banquet tables, these low flowers will look simple but stunning in their rows.

Scented Candles
Take it up a notch on your big day by including signature notes that will create a scented memory for guests and the happy couple to enjoy for a lifetime. Candles make for romantic centrepieces and help set the mood. Expect to see (or, rather, smell) more scented candles that couples choose from their favourites (or even create from scratch). This will make your wedding multi-dimensional and truly involve your guests’ five senses for a phenomenal experience that will stay with them for years to come.
Bridesmen and Groomsgirls
As times have grown more progressive, so too have weddings. In this coming year expect to see a bending of traditional wedding party roles as couples select from their closest friends, regardless of gender. The bridal party may include bridesmaids and bridesmen, the groomsmen may be joined by groomsgirls, and the coveted positions of maid of honour and best man may go to the man of honour and the best lady. Even supposed ‘less important’ roles, such as ring bearer and flower girl, may be taken up by less traditional people, such as the grandma of the bride or the groom’s aunt.

Traditional wedding roles should now be considered guides, not hard and fast rules, and couples all over are certainly having fun with it! It’s the year of being unconventional and uncomplicated for weddings.
